Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento

Construction Activities

In concert with the City of Sacramento, its Midtown neighbors, historians and archeologists, site preparation, demolition and early phase construction work is now underway around Sutter Medical Center.

Pre-construction activity includes the demolition of various buildings, including the Trinity Apartments, St. Luke's parking structure, House of Furs, Dr. John Kasch's office building and the MTI buildings. Additionally, utilities work in the streets bounded by 26th and 30th Streets between K and N Streets is a critical part of the on-going project work.

"We have an extraordinary partnership with the City of Sacramento, SMUD, the archeological team, our neighbors and many others in undertaking pre-construction and site preparation work. To date, we're making great progress," says SMCS Project Manager Tom O'Leary.

In coordination with the City, construction activities will occur between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. The contractor will follow Air Quality Management District Guidelines and will mitigate for noise and dust disruptions. All staging areas and water tanks will be located as far from residential, hospital, medical office, and other noise-sensitive areas as possible. During construction, the contractors will work diligently to ensure that impacts will be kept to a minimum.

Litigation

In January 2006, Service Employees International Union filed an "Intent to Sue" Motion in Sacramento Superior Court, alleging Sutter Medical Center's Environmental Impact Report did not fully address all possible environmental mitigations.

We are very optimistic that upon review of all supporting documents, the court will affirm that the environmental review conducted by the City of Sacramento fully complies with the California Environmental Quality Act.

The SMCS Environmental Impact Report received the unanimous support of the Sacramento City Council, Planning Commission and Design Review and Preservation Board.

Timeline

It is difficult to predict the pace of activity, however we are committed to an on-going dialogue with the community about this important community project at every step along the way.

We will work to ensure the community understands that Sutter's medical campus expansion will continue to reflect the priorities of adjacent neighborhoods and the community at large. It is our aim to help create a livable atmosphere where people can shop, walk, work, be entertained, dine and reside. We are committed to working with the City of Sacramento, local businesses and our neighbors as we proceed to ensure the least possible disruption during preconstruction, demolition and construction.
